Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, is helping some students who were supposed to start next fall apply elsewhere.
With a shaky financial outlook, Hampshire decided this fall's incoming class would consist of only 77 students who had either accepted early decision or had taken a gap year.
It told those students in a letter that the college could only guarantee they would be able to attend the fall semester and it didn't know who would be teaching.
But the deadline to apply elsewhere had, in some cases, ed.
Hampshire president Miriam Nelson said the college is now assisting those who no longer want to attend.
"We've been working those students to help those students — if they do not want to come to Hampshire — to find other alternatives and most have very, very accepting and open to extending deadlines," she said.
Hampshire declined to provide the names of colleges willing to consider students beyond their issions deadlines. But UMass Amherst and Amherst College confirmed they're giving extra time to those students.
