The Springfield City Council has rejected a new contract with police sergeants, lieutenants and captains.
Besides a pay raise, the proposed contract would increase the amount of time the police department has to bring disciplinary charges against its supervisors from 90 days to 120. That’s from the date of the incident.
City Council President Justin Hurst was among those who voted no.
He said the longer timeframe is better but asked, "What happens if we do not learn about the incident until day 121, and that would mean those who have been victimized would not be able to hold those officers able?"
According to The Republican, the city has insisted the councilors' concerns are addressed by a clause in the contract.
